8 STEPS TO OPENING THE GATEWAY TO THE FUTURE OF MUSIC

Understand these 8 points, and you shall never hear music the same way again!

1) Light can transmit an infinite number of colors, just as sound can transmit an infinite number of musical pitches.

2) Varieties of color and varieties of musical pitch are all just WAVES vibrating at different frequencies.

3) The use of color in art has evolved through time.

4) Musical harmony also has developed through time, but the potential for further harmonic evolution STOPPED 500 YEARS AGO with the standardization of a 12-note tuning system.

5) Just as 12 colors would never be enough to express the full range of visual possibility, the 12 intervals recognized in modern “western” music are not enough to express the full range of musical possibility.

6) With a basic understanding of the science of musical tuning, one can easily see there are INFINITE MUSICAL UNIVERSES that lie beyond the scope of the piano and other standard instruments. Many of these un-utilized sonic universes have already been extensively mapped!

7) Computer software has already been developed to simulate these infinite sonic universes.

8) The final missing piece of the puzzle has NOW FINALLY been put in place and is revealed here for the first time: an ACOUSTIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENT designed to navigate the infinite realms of musical wonder and beauty. MUSIC SHALL NEVER BE THE SAME EVER AGAIN!

… the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep… And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light… God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”

This opening statement of the most well known literary work in history is not included here for any “religious” purpose.  There is a hidden meaning in this passage! And it is the KEY to awakening the FUTURE OF MUSIC:  And that is: We as humans can generally only recognize the differences between things when they are DISTINGUISHED with LANGUAGE.

THINK ABOUT IT!

The "average person" may experience in their daily life:

LIGHT GREEN

DARK BLUE

But a person with a good color vocabulary may experience:

CHARTREUSE

LAPIS LAZULI

PISTACHIO

STEEL BLUE

SPRING BUD

FRENCH BLUE

MINDARO

JORDY BLUE

LIMERICK

CERULEAN

Although the left column is “green” and the right is “blue”, each variety of green and blue evokes a different mood or impression on the viewer.  The same thing is true with varieties musical intervals! Keep reading:

Different categories of color can be compared to different categories of musical intervals:

It is obvious that we can easily SEE not only “green” and “blue” but also many shades of “green” and “blue”.  But what has been ignored by modern western musicians, is that, indeed we can easily HEAR the musical intervals “second”, “third”, etc but we can ALSO easily HEAR many varieties of “seconds” and “thirds”.  It should now be VERY CLEAR that just as a painter can paint with infinite visual colors, so should a musician have the freedom to compose and perform music with INFINITE SHADES OF MUSICAL COLORS!

Just as we can better recognize all the varieties of colors by having IDENTITIES for them, all that is left to do now is to begin IDENTIFYING new musical intervals, and INFINITELY VAST NEW SONIC UNIVERSES WILL BE AT OUR FINGERTIPS!

So.......... LET'S BEGIN!

First a very very short overview of tuning theory:

All vibrating strings or vibrating columns of air produce a series of simultaneous waves called overtones:

The nodes (where the amplitude of the wave is zero) of each overtone fall at different places on a line. Tuning a note by shortening a string/air column to a nodal point or simple proportion of the original length is called Just Intonation

CONGRATULATIONS!  Now you know more about musical tuning than 99.999% of all musicians in the world! As you may imagine, Just Intonation intervals sound very “in-tune” and very harmonious because the overtones “line up”.  Even the untrained ear can hear this!

The notes on a piano or guitar are NOT tuned with the Just Intonation system.  “Modern western music” uses a system called 12 Tone Equal Temperament, which we will now abbreviate as 12ET.  12ET was chosen as an international standard because it is a rather convenient system that enables musicians and instruments from different places to come together and make music together.  However, this convenience comes along with some very “unhealthy” side effects.

The notes in 12ET are 12 evenly spaced intervals that repeat across the range of the instrument like a rigid grid of squares. 12ET basically IGNORES the overtone series!  In 12ET, the overtones of the intervals don’t line up very well, and thus the intervals are all quite dissonant and unstable!  However, due to the fact our ears have heard 12ET so much, our brains have adjusted to it, and therefore we no longer perceive the inaccuracy and instability of the intervals (much like the body that has adjusted to an unhealthy diet and becomes unaware of the foods that are going inside of it).

However, most musical systems in “non-western” cultures throughout history have used Just Intonation as their basis. This is due to the fact the ears NATURALLY gravitate towards these intervals.  Each interval in the Just Intonation system, has a very distinct sound, and each evokes a very distinct mood or emotion.  Much like an actor who must be able to draw from a bank of thousands of different moods and emotions to communicate a story, a musician should now realize that there are thousands of distinct musical intervals that can be drawn from to communicate specific moods and emotions in a musical story!

Ok, so we have SAID a lot… but this is MUSIC!  Now it is time to hear something.  So we will begin this new musical adventure by listening to some new musical intervals!

The following is a recording of 22 WONDROUSLY BEAUTIFUL intervals NOT FOUND ON PIANOS OR GUITARS.  This selection of Just Intonation intervals is called the “Evangelina” tuning system, and it was created by Erv Wilson.  Erv Wilson is the modern genius of tuning theory.  He made brilliantly conceived sonic maps, laying the foundation for the future of music.  This is one of the many “scales of the future” just waiting to be plucked into aural existence by musicians of the future. Wilson has stated that out of all of the many tuning systems he has discovered, the “Evangelina” is his favorite!

Here are the proportions used to generate each of these intervals in this system (don’t worry about trying to understand for now, just know they exist):

1a) 1/1  2)135/128  3)13/12  4)10/9  5)9/8  6)7/6  7)11/9  8)5/4  9)81/64  10)4/3  11)11/8  12)45/32  13)17/12  14)3/2  15)19/12  16)13/8  17)5/3  18)27/16  19)7/4  20)11/6  21)15/8  22)243/128 1b)2/1

On this recording, there are 3 repetitions of each interval.  Each interval is played live on the Infinitone.  Listen not only to the SOUND that each interval makes, but also to the EMOTION.  Listen with your EARS and your BODY (you can listen with your body by feeling the vibrations and inner physical response to the sound). Now, turn on the best sound system you have.  Hit play. Close your eyes.  And listen!

WOW! Can you believe musicians in “modern western culture” have been making music for hundreds of years TOTALLY UNAWARE of such rich harmonic and melodic substance????? NOT A SINGLE INTERVAL YOU JUST HEARD is recognized in “modern western music”.  Is this perhaps a creative tragedy, that our mind, body, and soul have been deprived of such powerful and potent sounds?  Perhaps we in “western culture” are suffering from VIBRATORY MALNOURISHMENT!

So by now, you have come to the realization that the world of music is so much more VAST and BEAUTIFUL than we previously had ever imagined!

In 2014, I came to this same realization which you have come to just now.

I decided something MUST be done about this. So, being a saxophone player, I decided to invent the “saxophone of the future”!!!!

THE INFINITONE IS THE FIRST ACOUSTIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IN HISTORY THAT CAN INSTANTLY PLAY ANY HARMONIC COLOR AT ANY TIME!

By now you are probably wondering, what really is this “Infinitone” thing, and how does it work?????

Well……. howabout I show you!

Plato wrote about the power of the world of IDEAS.  The concept that “one can sit”, creates the “idea of a chair”, which then can become “millions of chairs”.

Then when NEW TECHNOLOGY is applied to OLD CONCEPTS,  THE ONLY LIMIT THAT REMAINS IS YOUR IMAGINATION!

Infinitonica is founded on the IDEA that musicians should be free to tune musical intervals however they please.  This has given birth to the INFINITONE.  Now it is time that the Infinitone takes on a life of its own, and branches out into many varieties and variations! If you let your imagination run wild with this…… then CAUTION!…… you might become OVERJOYED dreaming of the musical possibilities of the FUTURE!

For those of you longing for the “Golden Era of Music” of the Past……… take comfort in knowing………… WE AIN’T HEARD NOTHIN’ YET!……………

AND NOW......... THE MOMENT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR INFINITONIC MUSIC, PLAYED ON THE INFINITONE!

What could Infinitonic music possibly sound like?  Think about it like this:

Film makers have long been making films about future civilizations or cultures of imagined realities.  They create clothing, architecture, technology, species of plants and animals, landscapes, and all other elements of that imagined reality……… EXCEPT THE MUSIC!  The music in movies is always based on music theory dogmas established HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO in specific European cultures!

Infinitonica now gives the musician the total freedom to invent NEW MUSICAL REALITIES!  Imagine a movie set 500 years in the future…….. with the MUSIC OF THE FUTURE!!! Musicians now can have the freedom to imagine any type of music they could possibly want!

This first piece of Infinitonic music presented here can be thought of as the music of an IMAGINED CULTURE.  It is not “jazz” or “rock” or “funk” or “world music”……. it is a style of music unto its own…… a yet-to-be classified genre of an imagined reality perhaps even more real than reality as we currently know it.

Presenting:

BAZAARIO

a short piece of music for:

INFINITONIC WOODWIND QUARTET AND PERCUSSION

composed, performed, and recorded by

Subhraag Singh

Instrumentation:

2 Infinitones

2 Retuned Tenor Saxophones*

“Found” Percussion

*Saxophones retuned with Melodyne software

PLEASE NOTE!  This is a work in progress! This is just a very small “simulation” of the potential the future holds. For demonstration purposes, some electronic processing was necessary to simulate the future possibilites.  This severely compromises the expressiveness of the music.  In the future Infinitonic music will all be produced completely LIVE and 100% ACOUSTICALLY!

The intervals used in this composition were selected from Alain Danielou’s 53-note “Universal Scale of Sounds” Just Intonation system:

1/1, 9/8, 256/225, 6/5, 32/25, 512/375, 45/32, 36/25, 3/2, 27/16, 126/75, 9/5, 729/400, 15/8, 256/135

Listening suggestions:

1) Listen on the best sound system you have.

2) Listen with your ears as well as your BODY.  These new kinds of harmonies will dance through you in new ways!

3) Don’t be afraid to turn this music up a bit LOUD!  It’s meant to be exhilarating, evocative, and powerful!

4) ENJOY!

Thank you for listening! I suggest listening to this piece of music multiple times over the next days.  Your brain might take a bit of time to digest and properly experience these new sounds.

The journey into the realm of INFINITONCA has now begun! There is much work left to be done!

6 STEPS FOR THE FUTURE OF INFINITONICA

  1. Build the Infinitone 2.0 (already designed!), which will improve speed, clarity, sound quality, resonance, accuracy, ease of use, and signal to noise.
  2. Build Alto, Tenor, and Bass Infinitones to complete a “real life” Infinitone quartet
  3. Compose and record a full length work of inspiring powerful Infinitonic music that will introduce Infintonica into the public sphere.
  4. Write new software programs that will be used to compose Infinitonic music and operate Infinitonic Instruments.  These programs should be user friendly, and will be used by composers/performers all over the world to both write and perform Infinitonic music.
  5. Design/build a whole family of Infinitonic instruments that would include other types of woodwinds (similar to flutes and clarinets), strings (bowed and plucked), brass, organs, percussion etc.
  6. Evoke the imaginations of creators and consumers of music such that Infinitonca will be the standard of music in the future.  The future will then be free from antiquated and dogmatic musical structures and theories.  We will soon have an abundance of wondrously beautiful new musical treasures in all areas in which music is utilized in our cultures.

The soil has been tilled and the seeds of this musical REVOLUTION have now been planted!  NOW IS THE TIME to NURTURE and GROW!

CONTACT ME, Subhraag Singh, inventor of the Infinitone, with any questions or comments.  I am currently searching for avenues to improve and expand, so if you have interest in contributing to this project or know anyone else who does, please let me know.

THANK YOU to the many great individuals who have laid the foundation for Infinitonica and who continue now to nourish its growth.  I have not created this alone, but with the direct and indirect help many.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to all of you who have contributed knowingly or unknowingly.  In the near future, there will be a page on this website sharing information about some of the Infinitonica’s primary influences.

Glossary:

Infintone:  A technologically-enabled or “cyborg” woodwind instrument similar to a saxophone.  The future will see a whole family of Infinitones, such as alto, tenor, baritone, and bass Infinitones.  The future will also see a whole family of other “cyborg” Infintonic instruments such as Infinitars (Infinitonic string instruments), and other Infinitonic instruments of many varieties whose names and designs have yet to be finalized.

Infinitonic:  Of or pertaining to music that is not limited by any particular historically established tuning system.  The derivation of the word Infinitonic is: Infinite, meaning limitless; and tone, which not only refers to pitches in music, but to all permutations of the word “tone” pertaining to color, mood, attitude, etc.  The word “xenharmonic”, coined by Ivor Darreg, has a similar meaning to “Infinitonic”.  However “xenharmonic” excludes music related to 12-tone-equal-temperament (12ET), whereas “Infinitonic” is an all inclusive system.  The term “microtonal” is often used to describe music with non-standard tuning systems.  However this term is unfit to be used in these circumstances because a) all music regardless of the tuning system has microtones, and b) the word “microtonal” typically means “the notes in-between the notes of 12ET”.  Infinitonica does not use 12ET as a primary foundation for music and thus the concept of using “notes in-between the notes in 12ET” is rendered meaningless.

Infinitonica:  The realm of Infintonic music and Infinitonic culture.
